One of the key factors in becoming a skillful Mah Jong player is keeping a count of tiles other players discard. Normally the discarded tiles are shown face up either in a common area for all players (either ordered one after another or in random order), or in four areas separately for each player. However, in some Western rules (notably in the French rules) the discarded tiles are placed face down on board.

Tip: If you choose to play with hidden discards, you most probably want to disable display of available tiles, as well. To do that, you must disable hints. Note that even if the hints are enabled you can always turn off the Available Tiles window by using the menu command of the View menu.
