Enabling
or disabling hints
To enable or disable hints:
- Choose Preferences on the File menu.
- Choose Gameplay under the User Interface section in
the category tree of the Preferences dialog box.
- Check or clear the Hints box.
The hints include:
- Hint on tile to be discarded. When it is your turn, you can display suggestion
for the tile to be discarded by choosing Hint on the Game menu, or by pressing CTRL+H.
The quality of the hint is determined by the strategy selected for the human player on the
Players option page in the Preferences dialog box.
Note: If you have four complete sets and a pair, the current scoring
for the hand is displayed on the status line. This is useful information, if
there is a minimum point requirement for the winning hand. Notice too, that
if the hand is a valid winning hand, no tile is lifted as a suggestion for
discard. This is a simple way to guarantee that you won't make faulty
declaration of Out.
- Hint on valuable hands and patterns. You can have the computer
suggest hands and patterns worth collecting while using the Hands tab of the Game Manager. Right
click the list of the special hands and choose Suggest collectibles from
the pop-up menu. The suggested hands appear in bold.
- Number of times a particular tile has been played. If you have checked the Show discards box
on the Gameplay option page (under the User Interface section
in the category tree of the Preferences dialog box), you can count the
number a particular tile has been played so far. You can let Four Winds count the
available tiles for you by holding down the SHIFT key and moving the
mouse cursor over the tiles in your hand. If the tile is a suit tile (e.g., Bamboo 3), the message line displays also the number the adjacent
suit tiles (Bamboo 2 and Bamboo 4) have been played.
- Available Tiles window. Offers the same functionality as the previous option, but
shows the available tiles in graphical form. You can display or hide this
window by choosing Available Tiles on the View menu.
- Successors of Dora indicators. If you have checked the Dora tiles box
on the General option page (under the Rules section in
the category tree of the Preferences dialog box), you can toggle the view
between the Dora indicators and the actual Dora tiles by right clicking the area of the Dora
tiles (either at the bottom of the Wall
window or in the Dora Tiles window).
The actual Dora tiles are successors of Dora indicators and they are the
tiles you must have in hand in order to score bonus for Dora tiles. For more
information on the use of Dora tiles, check the help topic Extra and special tiles
Dora tiles.
