Troubleshooting – Problems with saving or loading statistics or high scores

If you get an error message related to saving or loading statistics, high scores or other program-generated user-specific game data, you can do the following to correct the problem.

The problem might be caused because statistics, high scores, etc. are saved in a location where you do not have write privileges.

To change the location where user-specific game data is saved:
  1. Choose Preferences on the File menu.
  2. Choose General under the User Interface section in the category tree of the Preferences dialog box and click the Folders button.
  3. Specify the paths for desired user files.

Note: You can use Auto Private button to specify the default user-specific folder (typically C:\Documents and Settings\[User name]\[My Documents]\4Winds2 or C:\[Users]\[User name]\[Documents]\4Winds2), and Auto Common button to specify the default public folder (typically C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\[Shared Documents]\4Winds2 or C:\[Users]\[Public]\[Documents]\4Winds2). (The folder names in brackets indicate names that might be localized in different language versions of Windows.) To revert to default values, click Reset, and to specify a custom folder, click Modify.

If this does not resolve the problem, it is likely that the statistics or high score file is corrupt. You can solve the problem by deleting the file.

To delete statistics, scores or favorites:

  1. Individual statistics files can be deleted by using the Statistics tab of the Game Manager (choose the desired rules from the list and then right click anywhere in the statistic and choose Clear Statistics from the pop-up menu.
  2. Individual high scores files can be deleted by accessing the Scores dialog box, clicking Best Hands, using the navigation buttons to select the desired rule preset, and the clicking the Clear button. Game-specific high scores and favorites can be In the similar way, clicking first the Best Games or the Favorites button.
  3. If individual information cannot be delete in this way, you should delete the files directly in the locations where they are saved. The current locations can be checked by using the routine described above. The hand-specific high scores are saved in 4WGSnn.dat files (where nn represents the number of the rule preset), the game-specific high scores 4WHSnn.dat files, the statistics in the 4WSSnn.dat files, and favorites in the 4WFavors.dat file.
